Description

The IASI level 3 CO data records provide monthly averages of total columns, for day time and night time measurements. We differentiate Climate Data Record (CDR) and Interim Climate Data Record (ICDR) data, depending of the IASI L2 used to perform the monthly averages. The notation "Interim" CDR, or ICDR, is used to account for all CO products produced outside the CDR reprocessing exercise, i.e. the time-series of IASI on Metop-C (2019 onwards). Note that the Metop-C data (2019 onwards) is running with the same algorithm as for CDR reprocessed data, and as such was not included in the reprocessing exercise. DOI: 10.15770/EUM_SAF_AC_0054

Type

Climate Data Record (CDR) and Interim Climate Data Record (ICDR). The data for previous month is available to the users on the 6th day of the current month.

Satellites and instruments

IASI/Metop-A, IASI/Metop-B and IASI/Metop-C

Algorithm version

FORLI CO v20151001

Time period

  • IASI/Metop-A: 07/2007 - 12/2019 (CDR only)
  • IASI/Metop-B: 03/2013 onwards (CDR until 12/2023)
  • IASI/Metop-C: 12/2019 onwards (ICDR only)

Theoretical basis

The Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI (FORLI) algorithm retrieval of this product is based on the optimal estimation method. It relies on a radiative transfer model based on pre-calculated look-up tables (LUTs) and an inversion scheme to process IASI level 1C radiances.

Processing

FORLI is a dedicated radiative transfer and retrieval software for IASI. It was developed at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in collaboration with LATMOS, with the objective to provide global concentration distributions of atmospheric trace gases.

Units and spatial resolution

CO total column grids are given in molecules/cm2 with global 1° x 1° spatial resolution.

Validation

This product is validated by LATMOS. Validation is performed with MOPITT L3 data. See the Validation Report for more details. We recall that IASI L2 CO CDR data, used to produce L3, have been validated with NDACC measurements (see Validation Report written by BIRA/IASB).

Dissemination

See data record access information.

File format

This product is available in NetCDF-4 format.
