AHS Class of 1960

Members of the AHS Class of 1960 attended their 50th class reunion the weekend of August 13th-15th.  About 145 attended the Friday gathering at the American Legion Post 88, where they enjoyed a buffet of snacks and appetizers and a good time getting reacquainted.  A 50/50 drawing was won by Bill Morr of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

On Saturday, Jerry Weiss was in charge of a golf outing which was won by Dave and Sandy Wait and Joyce and David McFadden.  Tom Wurster made arrangements for tours of the Historical Society, the Dauch building and the Ashland University stadium.

The Saturday evening event was at the AU Convocation Center with attendance totaling 174.  Classmates traveled from as far away as Florida, California, Oklahoma and Georgia.  Eleanor Burns Wells gave the table grace.  Judy Holmes McQuate was in charge of the memorial table.  Decorations were under the direction of Judy Staley.  Karen Troxel Ticknor made names tags that included each person’s graduation picture and maiden names, along with current names.

Each classmate was presented with a coaster with a photo of the high school (now the middle school) designed and made by David Winger.  Winger, Karen Withers Stradling and Wurster, with suggestions made by other classmates, worked diligently to prepare a booklet of classmates, their addresses, current photos and accomplishments in the past 50 years.  The cover was designed by Tom Byers and Louise Wachtel Winger.  Jim Pifer was in charge of a silent auction that was conducted with money paid being put into the class treasury for future reunions.  Door prizes were won by several attendees.  The 50/50 drawing was won by Barbara Carpenter Rogers of Washington Courthouse.  Various individuals were thanked for all of their hard work to make the reunion such a success.

It was announced that Hospice and the Ashland County Cancer Society had been selected to receive a donation from the class.

Bud and Betty Plank were special guests for the evening.

Maurer Photography took a photo of all classmates in attendance which was available at the end of the evening.

Individuals could also attend a Sundy brunch at the Accent Room.

Local reunion officers include:  Grace Roseborough Vermillion, President; Dixie Sarkel Bennett, Vice President; Nancy Stone Barnes, Treasurer; Sue Humrichouser Norris, Secretary; and Karen Withers Stradling, Historian.

There will be a meeting of the local reunion group at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Buehler’s Mill Restaurant.  All class members, along with their spouses or significant others, are invited to attend.

Newsletters Changes

After gathering news of interest to AHS graduates and creating a newsletter twice yearly since the inception of Ashland City Schools Academic (now re-named Alumni) Foundation in1994, the board has determined that the economy is requiring us to curtail some of our expenses and publish once each year.
We realize that many graduates are providing money in memory and in honor of classmates and teachers,  which we have used to provide many grants over the years for items in the classrooms which the school is not able to provide. By cutting back on the newsletters, we believe we will be better stewards of the money you are entrusting to our endowment fund. We are expecting that we will be able to return to two newsletters each year as the economy grows and stabilizes.
We thank you all for your understanding. Our current idea is that we will provide a newsletter sometime in August/September, as school begins again and some top stories will be available, including the new Distinguished Alumnus nominees who will be inducted Oct. 2-3, and a tail-gate party prior to the Ashland Arrows-Mansfield Senior Tygers football game Oct. 2.
In the meantime, other items of interest will appear on the acsaf.org and the ashlandcityschools.org websites.
We are asking that those of you reading information on this website, share the address with your friends who might not otherwise be aware of the websites. Those friends not computer-savvy, might appreciate you printing a copy of the information and snail-mail it to them.
Thank you so much for your patience as we strive to do the best we can.

New Name– Same Acronym

After several months of discussing the idea of changing the Ashland City Schools Academic Foundation name, it was determined that the change would occur immediately with a unanimous vote of the board.
After numerous misconceptions throughout the years, it has been determined that some people of the area might do better if the one-word change will be Academic to Alumni. It was felt that we mail out nearly 13,000 newsletters to alumni members, it might be better understood by those receiving them, by using alumni rather than academic.
We will continue using the same acronym, ACSAF. The original goal continues to be: “An independent foundation established to generate monies for the academic education of children in the Ashland City Schools, and to promote the teaching skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies, social sciences and other related academic subjects.”
